Beane and His Crinoids
Mr. Beane devoted many years of his life to the collection and preservation of the remarkable crinoid slabs that are on display in these cases. He collected the slabs over a period of several years (beginning in 1931) from a quarry near Le Grand, Iowa (about 80 kilometers northeast of Des Moines). The crinoids were found in three thin rock layers. When the quarry workers encountered a fossil-rich layer, they stopped work and called Mr. Beane. He would then split off the slabs of the layer using flattened nails driven into the rock every few centimeters. Once free, the slabs were transported to his farm on an old hay wagon pulled by a team of horses. Mr. Beane stored the slabs in an old chicken barn, which he had converted into a fossil workshop. There, he cleaned the crinoids free of their matrix using a small hammer and pick, old dental tools, a toothbrush, and a small broom. Some the scratches from the pick can still be seen on the slabs exhibited here.
